Life In & Around BayfieldOrchards and Farms: Bayfield is known as the “Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” and with good reason; there are numerous berry farms that produce delicious strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries from June through September. Visit the farms and have fun picking berries, taking tours, and sampling jams and jellies. Bayfield could just as well be called the “Orchard Capital of Wisconsin,” so be sure to stop by one of the many orchards for apples, pears, grapes, plums, maple syrup, and even wine tasting. Golfing: Ideally situated on the Bayfield Peninsula, Apostle Highlands Golf Course is a challenging, 18-hole course with views of Lake Superior on 13 holes. The Robert Trent Jones-designed Madeline Island Golf Club is located on the largest of the Apostle Islands and features unique double greens and rolling fairways. Boating: Known for its sailing, Lake Superior has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in world. If you don’t have your own boat, don’t worry--Bayfield offers charter boat tours, sailboat rides, and powerboat instruction. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore encompasses nearly 70,000 acres and offers additional opportunities for boating and kayaking to historic lighthouses and sandstone sea caves. Fishing: Lake Superior and Chequamegon Bay are ideal fishing spots for salmon, lake trout, northern walleye, and northern pike. Many local charters would be happy to take you and your family out on the lake, but if you have your own boat, there are several marinas and launch ramps in the area. Winter Activities: With 65 skiable acres, Mt. Ashwabay overlooks Lake Superior and offers downhill and cross-country skiing, night skiing, and snowboarding. Other winter adventures include the annual “Run on Water” over the Lake Superior ice road and “Book Across the Bay” ski race across Chequamegon Bay. Dining and Shopping: Bayfield’s restaurants, known to incorporate local fruit and fish into their dishes, have been featured in many national publications including the New York Times and Gourmet magazine. A number of charming shops and boutiques line Bayfield’s streets, offering unique gifts, homemade candy, and antiques. In recent years, Bayfield has attracted a variety of artists, including painters, potters, and woodworkers, and has been named one of the 100 Best Small Art Towns in America. Awards and Recognition:
